Special teams helps Cochrane skate past Timmins

TIMMINS, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch scored twice on the power play and once more shorthanded to help them knock off the Timmins Rock 5-2 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up played Saturday at McIntyre Arena.

Timmins did score first in the contest as Tristan Salesse collected his team-leading 21st goal of the season midway through the opening stanza.

Cochrane countered with the equalizer with four minutes left in the first as Seamus Maguire potted his 19th of the campaign.

The Crunch power play allowed them to take the lead in the middle session as Jeremy McNeil and Jeran Knorr both added man advantage markers to put the visitors up 3-1 through two.

Nicholas Hautanen brought the Rock to within one with 12:51 to go in regulation, but Cochrane put the game away as Hunter Atchison supplied his 31st tally overall at 10:56 and then iced it as he scored again, this time shorthanded, with three minutes left as he picked up his NOJHL-best 32nd goal of the season.

Maguire had three assists to go along with his goal while Dustin Cordeiro also had a trio of helpers.

Joey Mavrin added two assists as well for the Crunch.

Allan Menary made 28 saves in earning the win in net for Cochrane.

Rock goaltender Logan Ferrington saw 43 pucks fired his way in defeat for Timmins.
