Red-hot Gold Miners skate to 8th straight victory

COCHRANE, Ont. – The red-hot Kirkland Lake Gold Miners got three points apiece from Tyler Fyfe, Stavros Soilis and Alex Storjohann to help them reel off their eighth consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory Friday as they defeated the Cochrane Crunch 5-4 at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Both clubs came out clicking offensively in the first period with each side scoring three times in the session.

Cochrane grabbed a quick 2-0 lead before the contest was 90 seconds old on markers from Konnar Dechaine and Kyle Herbster to spell an early end to Gold Miners’ starter Allan Menary’s night.

Kirkland Lake then came back by striking three times in a nine-minute span to go in front compliments of Fyfe on the power play as well as Kevin Ford and Fyfe again at even strength.

Up a man late in the frame the Crunch tied it as Nate Viberg drew the home side level thanks to the power play.

Soilis put the Gold Miners back into the lead six minutes into the middle stanza as he converted on a man advantage before Viberg’s second of the night knotted things up once again.

The visitors then picked got the game-winner with 28 seconds left in the period as they buried their third power play goal of the night with Storjohann supplying the decider.

Cochrane fired a dozen shots on Ridge Gerads in the Kirkland Lake net in the third, but could not solve him as he stood tall to help record the win.

Gerads finished with 41 saves in a lengthy relief stint to secure the victory for the Gold Miners with Taylor Unruh seeing 23 shots in defeat for the Crunch.
