COCHRANE, Ont. – Jack Kelly picked up a pair of goals, while goaltender Caleb Sanders collected his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory, as part of a 6-2 decision by the Powassan Voodoos over the Cochrane Crunch Friday at Tim Horton Event Centre.
Striking first, Powassan got on the board half way through the opening frame thanks to Kelly whipping one past Cochrane starter Jake Dubinsky from the slot as he quickly finished off a Chase Thompson feed.
The tally for Kelly saw him score for a third straight outing.
The Voodoos tacked on another seconds before the first intermission thanks to Ryan Patrick stuffing one into the open corner off a scramble in front.
In the middle frame, Powassan connected while up a skate as Conor O’Brien fired a shot from up high that sailed past a screened Dubinsky 7:53.
The Crunch did get one back with nine minutes left in the session thanks to Tyler Rimstad quickly converting off a Ben Sherman chance that went wide right, but came quickly out on the other side, where it was put in.
However, the visitors countered immediately on the next shift to regain their cushion as they saw Austin Vassos jam in his initial NOJHL effort, by ending a goal-mouth scramble.
Not done there, Nathan MacDonald made it 5-1 shortly thereafter when he beat Dubinsky from a sharp angle with a rising shot.
Up a skater late in the period, the home side pulled back to within three following Jonathan Hutorsky backhanding one in from the left of the crease.
In the third, Kelly potted his second of the night moments in, on a shorthanded breakaway, as he buried one in on the left corner to round out the night’s scoring.
