OJHL’s Voyageurs slip past Crunch in Polar Bear Classic action
COCHRANE, Ont. – Connor Cobbold tallied twice, including the game-winner, as the Kingston Voyageurs (OJHL) defeated the Cochrane Crunch 3-2 Thursday evening in Game 2 of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Polar Bear Classic preseason tournament at the Tim Horton Event Centre in Cochrane.
It was all Kingston in the opening 20 minutes as they outshot Cochrane 19-7 in the frame and they were rewarded with their efforts getting goals from Darian Overland and Cobbold to go up by a pair.
The Crunch cut into the deficit at 15:41 of the second Rory Milne effort only to see Cobbold restore the visitors cushion with the eventual decider with 3:32 remaining in the stanza.
With starter Leighton Williams on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, Cochrane pulled back to within one with 73 seconds to go on Milne’s second of the night, but that’s as close as they would get before time ran out.
Zach Springer started for the Voyageurs and stopped all 11 attempts he faced in just over 30 minutes of work.
Rock Boynton picked up the win in relief for the Ontario Junior Hockey League side handling 23 of the 25 shots fired his way, including 17 in the final session.
Williams was the busiest of the three netminders on the night seeing 38 pucks fired on target in defeat for the Crunch.
Four more match-ups are on the Polar Bear Classic slate Friday beginning with the Iroquois Falls Eskis taking on Cochrane at 10 a.m.
Following that contest Kingston takes on the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners at 12:30 p.m. followed by Kirkland Lake meeting Iroquois Falls at 6 p.m. before the day concludes with the Express and Crunch facing off at 8:30 p.m.
