Crunch hold on to edge Voodoos

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch built up a three-goal lead then withstood a Powassan Voodoos comeback bid and held on for a 3-2 triumph in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Monday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Cochrane got going offensively late in the opening period as Jon Marzec notched his eighth of the season at 18:06 of the stanza.

The visiting Crunch added to their cushion at 6:58 of the second as Taylor Armbruster scored his first NOJHL goal to make it 2-0.

Special teams allowed Cochrane to connect again as Aviv Milner beat Powassan starter Garrett Forrest with a power play marker at 9:15 with the eventual game-winner.

Sporting special Pink in the Rink jerseys in support of the Canadian Cancer Society, the Voodoos got on the board with a man advantage effort of their own with just over five minutes remaining in the middle stanza as Eric Champagne buried his ninth of the campaign as his effort eluded Crunch netminder Brett Young.

In the third, Powassan pulled to within one with 3:48 left in regulation when Tyler Gervais-Rolfe finished off a Josh Ibbitson feed, but that’s as close as they would get as Cochrane held on for the road victory.

Milner also had an assist in the contest as he extended a consecutive game point streak to four with his fourth multi-point game in succession.

Young finished with 44 saves to record the win for Cochrane as they improved to 21-4-1-2 on the campaign.

Forrest had 43 stops in defeat as the Voodoos slipped to 19-4-0-1.
