Cochrane’s Cordeiro commits to St. Scholastica of the NCHA

COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forward Dustin Cordeiro has committed to attend the College of St. Scholastica and play NCAA D-III hockey for the Saints starting in the fall.

The now 21-year-old Cordeiro, who calls Kitchener, Ont., home, was a tremendous player in the NOJHL for four full seasons contributing mightily offensively and was a leader on and off the ice.

Cordeiro was named a league CCM Hockey second team all-star at left wing in 2015-16 and was fourth in league scoring with 86 points on 39 goals and 47 assists.

His tally total was also fourth-best among all 12 NOJHL teams while six of his markers were game-winners, which tied him for the fifth most overall.

He was also one of two players with a five-goal game in league play this season.

In 200 career NOJHL contests, Cordeiro amassed 225 points as he scored 122 times and help set-up another 103.

He was also a key contributor in the playoffs totalling 54 points in 38 postseason outings notching 30 markers while doling out 24 helpers.

Cordeiro’s 17 playoff points in 2016 tied him for the most in the league.

A member of Team NOJHL at the Eastern Canada Jr. A Challenge Cup, Cordeiro also earned multiple league Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week honours.

The talented forward was instrumental in Cochrane’s success the past two seasons and they knew he was a special player.

“We as an organization couldn’t be prouder of Dusty,” stated Crunch head coach, general manager and President Ryan Leonard.

“This a player who has shown loyalty to his team and his league and spent four full seasons with both,” added Leonard.

“You do not find many players with this kind of loyalty and with this kind of skill anymore,” surmised the 2015-16 NOJHL coach of the year, CCM Hockey first team all-star behind the bench and CCM second team GM.

“Dusty was and is the heart and soul of our program and we have some big shoes to fill,” finalized Leonard.

“We wish nothing but the best at the next stage in what we call life and college.”

Based in Duluth, Minn., St. Scholastica is members of the 11-school Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Under head coach Mark Wick, the Saints finished second in the NCHA North Division and posted an overall record of 15-10-3 in 28 outings.
