6-goal 2nd sends Crunch past Express

COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch used the strength of a six-goal second period to defeat the Espanola Express 9-5 Thursday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up held at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Espanola jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with Aaron Roschinsky striking shorthanded 4:44 into the contest before MacKenzie Aiken added another via the power play four minutes later.

Cochrane’s Dustin Cordeiro cut into the deficit before the frame was complete notching his league-leading 17th tally of the campaign.

The Crunch came out strong in the middle stanza netting two markers from Jeran Knorr as well as singles courtesy of Braeden Pearce and Hunter Atchison which spelled the end of Express starter Mitchell Jones’ night in favour of J.P. Sabourin.

Special teams saw Espanola’s Aiken pick up his club’s second man down effort of the night to make it 5-3 at 15:03.

Cochrane came back however with Knorr’s third of the period and one by Seamus Maguire to take a 7-3 cushion to the intermission.

Both sides would connect twice in the final session with Cordeiro adding his NOJHL-best 18th overall and Alex Goulet’s first, on the power play, scoring for the Crunch while Nevada Waindubence and Patrick Smith replied for the Express.

Knorr, Cordeiro and Atchison all finished with four-point nights for Cochrane.

Roschinsky added two assists along with his goal for Espanola.

Kurtis David made 31 saves to record the win with Sabourin suffering the loss in relief as he and Jones combined to face 43 shots in defeat.
