Timmins rallies to knock off Cochrane

TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock stormed back from a two-goal deficit by scoring four times in the second period before eventually prevailing with a 5-3 victory over the Cochrane Crunch Thursday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at McIntyre Arena.

It was the visiting Crunch that gained the upper hand early getting markers from Nate Viberg at 2:51 and Konnar Dechaine’s 27th of the season nine and a half minutes later to go up by a pair.

The Rock began their comeback 4:28 into the middle session when Jacob Shankar connected on the power play.

Cole Gilligan tied it a couple shifts later as he scored at even strength to pick up his 19th in 2016-17.

The Crunch went back in front midway through the second compliments of Bailey Shaver, but Timmins struck twice in the final two minutes of the period thanks to Wayne Mathieu and Brandon Campbell to take a 4-3 lead.

Special teams allowed the home side to extend their cushion 6:58 into the third as Mathieu added his second of the night and 17th overall on a Rock man advantage to wrap things up.

Mathieu also added an assist to give him a three-point night and seven in his past two games for the Rock.

Dean Kiriacou and Tyler Romain chipped in with a pair of helpers apiece for Timmins.

Al Rogers made 32 stops to record the win while Leighton Williams faced 22 attempts in defeat for Cochrane.
