KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners saw Tyler Fyfle tally twice and set-up two others as part of a five power play goal night by his club to aid in a 5-3 triumph over the Cochrane Crunch Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Kirkland Lake connected first in the contest six and a half minutes in as Kevin Ford scored on the man advantage to give the visitors the early lead.
Special teams helped the Gold Miners tack on two more during power plays with Marshal Nikitin and Fyfe taking turns setting each other up for tallies a minute and a half apart to go up 3-0 after one period of play.
A fourth extra man effort on the night saw Cochrane get one back a minute and a half into the second stanza off the stick of Kyle Herbster as his picked up his eight goal of the season.
Continuing to battle back, Herbster’s second of the evening midway through frame brought the Crunch to within one with half a game to play while up a skater.
Building on that momentum, the visitors drew level as defenceman Connor Lovie blasted in his fourth to tie things up.
A fourth Kirkland Lake power play marker saw them regain the lead with 7:22 to go on John Serafin’s first NOJHL goal, which proved to be the game-winner.
Fyfe then finished off his four-point night with a late man advantage insurance goal to secure the victory.
Nikitin also had two assists in the decision.
Ryan Winter was called upon to make 29 saves, including a second period penalty shot, to register the win for the Gold Miners while Taylor Unruh saw 30 attempts fired his way in defeat for Cochrane.
