Cochrane’s Menary shuts out Iroquois Falls

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – Allan Menary saved all 28 shots fired his way in a 5-0 shutout by the Cochrane Crunch over the Iroquois Falls Eskis in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena.

The game was scoreless until the late stages of the first period when Cochrane’s Seamus Maguire notched the night’s opening tally in what would also be the game-winning goal with 16 seconds remaining.

Special teams allowed the Crunch to go up by two, midway through the contest, as Jeremy McNeil connected on the power play and put the visitors up by two through 40 minutes.

Pumping 53 total shots on Eskis’ netminder Joe Sheppard throughout the evening, the offensive pressure allowed Cochrane to make it 3-0 two and a half minutes into the third as Brendan Van Sweden added to the lead.

Dustin Cordeiro supplied some insurance with 8:40 remaining before Hunter Atchison’s league-leading 41st tally of the season, which came shorthanded, iced it for the Crunch in the late going.

Jon Marzec picked up two assists for Cochrane on the night.

Sheppard’s 47 saves, including 23 in the first period alone, kept the Eskis in it for the longest time despite the defeat.
