Cochrane tops Timmins in high-scoring affair

COCHRANE, Ont. – It was a night of offensive production in Cochrane Friday as the hometown Crunch outlasted the Timmins Rock 10-7 in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

Each side picked up two goals apiece in the opening 20 minutes with Jon Marzec and John Stevenson staking the Crunch to an early lead before the Rock countered with markers from Bain Cunningham along with Landen Matechuk’s first NOJHL marker.

Two more tallies for each side in the middle session made it a 4-4 score through two periods with Hunter Atchison and Seamus Maguire getting on the board for Cochrane as Andrew Castagna and Tristan Salesse did likewise for Timmins.

The goals kept coming in the third with the Rock’s Matechuk starting the outburst 29 seconds into the stanza.

Cochrane came right back and tacked on three of their own with Marzec, Joseph Thielen and Tyler Minoletti making it 7-5 Crunch with still over 15 minutes remaining.

The back-and-forth affair saw the Rock battle to tie things up courtesy of efforts supplied by Aaron Kerr and Salesse.

The Crunch then retook the lead for good midway through the session with Aviv Milner potting the eventual game-winner.

Milner then added some insurance with 6:20 remaining before Atchison iced it with an empty netter in the final minute.

Stevenson dished out three assists for Cochrane for a four-point night with Kerr and Joe Olson supplying a trio of helpers apiece for the Rock.

Brett Young faced 42 shots in picking up the win for the Crunch while Logan Ferrington saw 51 attempts fired his way in defeat.

Allan Menary also saw a relief stint in net for Cochrane, but did not see any shots.
